This is not a Book Review

I read books because I like to ponder upon their ideas. And this writing is a pondering on the first ever Murakami book I am reading.

Fair Warning: I am not summarising, but I am also not holding onto any spoilers. So beware.

I attempted Norwegian Wood but could not stick to it, maybe because it was a digital copy. From my observation, the author’s books are popular among philosophy circles - hence I wanted to explore what I could find.

I am fond of anthologies as well - they have came into my observation more often since the release of Love Death Robots season 1 on Netflix. I believe the first season were all science fiction stories picked across multiple past issues, and these were written by indie writers.

Why I choose this book? Like I mentioned - anthologies! And this format seems to be a great way to begin my first introduction to the author.

The title caught my eye as well - I think I am in that phase where I am running a race against time to find a partner and settle down. And there’s always a question - what if I never find that woman. I am three stories down by now (today its 9th Dec ā€˜25), and yes none of the men in the these three stories have a woman they have settled with,

  1. Drive My Car - Married but wife no more - lost to a disease. Husband gets to know she had an extra marital relationship - he does not seem to be mad on her, but just wants to know why. What is that she was looking for.
  2. Yesterday - Story told by a third person about a guy and a girl who loved each other but never settled together.
  3. An Independent Organ - A guy who never fell in love, finally experienced it very late and could not handle the pain when he lost it.

Folks! neither of these three end with a conclusion. And I guess that’s the Murakami style - he leaves you to think - like actually ponder. So I guess I picked a right author for my taste in books haha

Drive My Car

The first one never says why his wife cheated. The husband along with us are all trying to figure out why and we do not get it! But like the husband, I the reader has the same information gathered - and I believe I can think something out here.

Yesterday

The second one - this guy is not interested in academics at all but has to pass so that he could be with his girlfriend. He never ends up passing and moves far away to become a cook and we are here hoping he would be happy wherever he is. Why didn’t these two end up together if they really liked each other? Was it that he just cared about her and it was not romantic, but they failed to understand the difference as high school kids?

An Independent Organ

Okay in this one the guy dies love sick. The women he loves lies to him as well as her husband and is now with a third guy. Our guy feels being used and kills himself of starvation? He inflicts pain on himself - makes himself shrivel smaller and smaller until he does not exist. Why would he take such a drastic measure?
